The Heart Behind the Song

I'll be honest with you—I wrote "Draw Me Closer" during one of those seasons where I was running on empty and pretending I wasn't.

Maybe you know the feeling. It's 2 AM and your mind won't stop spinning. You're carrying something heavy and you've been white-knuckling it for so long that you forgot there was another way. You're exhausted from trying to hold it all together.

This song came from that place—the raw, honest place where we finally stop performing and just... ask.

Lord, I can't do this anymore. I need You closer than my next breath.

When I wrote the line "teach me to breathe," I meant it literally. Sometimes life knocks the wind out of us so completely that we need the very Breath of Life to remind us how to inhale again.

This isn't a song about having it all figured out. It's a song about the beautiful moment when we stop striving and start surrendering. It's for anyone who has ever whispered in the dark, "I've reached the end of me."

Because here's what I've learned: that's exactly where God's peace begins. He doesn't meet us in our strength—He meets us in the hidden cracks, in the places where our confidence has worn thin. Not to shame us. To hold us. To carry us through until the dawn breaks.

If that's where you are today, I pray this song finds you there.

Rooted in Scripture

Every line of this song is anchored in God's Word:

On Peace Beyond Understanding

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:6-7

"Peace beyond all understanding / When my hope is nearly gone."

On Strength Through the Spirit

"'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the Lord Almighty." — Zechariah 4:6

"Not by my strength—when I've reached the end of me / Not by my power... But by Your Spirit."

On God Drawing Near to the Broken

"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18

"You meet me in the hidden cracks where confidence is thin."

On God Making a Way

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland." — Isaiah 43:19

"You always make a way—life where nothing else could grow."

A Prayer for You

If you're reading this and you're in that season of exhaustion—where you've been holding on by your fingernails—I want to pray for you:

Father, I lift up everyone reading these words who is running on empty. Meet them in their weariness. Remind them that Your strength is made perfect in weakness. Draw them closer to Your heart, where they can finally rest. In Jesus' name, Amen.
